iPhone 18 Pro: Rental vs Telco Plans

In Malaysia, renting an iPhone 18 Pro (256GB) from Cinch costs RM259/month on a 18-month plan (RM4,662), against RM5,499 to buy from Apple. Rental beats a telco contract if you upgrade yearly or want no carrier lock-in. Keep phones for 2 years or more? Buying wins.

The real question isn't which monthly number is lowest. It's how long you plan to keep the phone and what you're locked into while you have it.

For years, the default way to get a new iPhone in Malaysia was a telco bundle, with the device folded into a postpaid bill. Cinch, a device subscription service in Malaysia, takes the phone out of the bill. You rent the iPhone on a fixed term and keep whichever SIM plan you already have. With the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max now on sale, this guide compares iPhone rental vs telco contract in Malaysia using prices you can check today. It also covers a third route most people forget: Apple's own 0% installment plan.

How Much is the iPhone 18 Pro Rental in Malaysia?

On Cinch today, the iPhone 18 Pro 256GB is RM259/month for 18 months, RM275/month for 12 months, RM395/month for 6 months, and RM505/month for 3 months. The iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB is RM282/month on 18 months, RM300/month on 12 months, RM430/month on 6 months, and RM550/month on 3 months. Moving up to 512GB adds RM46/month on the 18-month plan, taking the Pro to RM305 and the Pro Max to RM328.

18 months is the longest term available on both models. The plans include up to 90% accidental damage coverage. You can pay with a debit card, and approval runs through an online credit check. If you'd rather keep the phone, you can buy it at any point after your first month.

Is a Telco Contract Cheaper than Renting an iPhone?

It depends on what share of the telco bill is really paying for the phone. Telco bundles combine the device and a postpaid line into one monthly charge, so the headline figure isn't comparable with a rental price.

To compare fairly, start with the bundle's monthly price. Subtract what the same postpaid plan costs on its own, SIM-only. What's left is the device portion. Multiply it by the contract length, then add any upfront payment. Compare that total with Cinch's term cost, for example RM4,662 for 18 months of the iPhone 18 Pro. Before signing, check two things: how long the contract runs and what it costs to leave early.

Telco offers change often, especially around launches, so do this sum with the live offer in front of you. A bundle can come out ahead if you were going to pay for that exact postpaid plan anyway and the device portion is heavily discounted.

iPhone 18 Pro Rental vs Apple's 0% Installment Plan

This is the comparison most Malaysians skip. Apple sells the iPhone 18 Pro 256GB at RM5,499 and offers 0% interest installments over 6, 12 or 24 months through participating banks, on purchases of RM2,000 or more, subject to your card issuer's approval. Over 24 months, the iPhone 18 Pro works out to RM229.13/month.

After 12 months on Apple's plan you've paid about RM2,750 and still owe another year of payments, but the phone will be yours. After 18 months with Cinch you've paid RM4,662, and you can return it, upgrade or extend. The roughly RM550 gap is the cost of flexibility and damage cover. One more difference: Apple's route requires a credit card from a participating bank. Cinch accepts debit cards.

iPhone 18 Pro Installment without a Credit Card

If you don't have a credit card, bank 0% installment plans aren't open to you. That leaves a telco bundle, buy-now-pay-later, or a subscription.

Cinch accepts debit cards and checks eligibility online in a few minutes. Some applicants may be asked to make an upfront payment as a condition of approval. Cinch says this amount isn't a fee and isn't held as a deposit. For a closer look at the buy-now-pay-later route, see our guide to phone rental vs BNPL.

When Buying or a Telco Contract is the Better Choice

Be honest about your upgrade habits. If you keep phones for two years or more, buying outright or on a bank 0% plan is usually cheaper: the iPhone 18 Pro costs RM5,499 over 24 months, and the phone is yours at the end. Renting for that long means renewing after year one.

A telco bundle makes sense if you were going to sign up for that postpaid plan anyway, the device portion works out cheaper than Cinch's term cost, and you're happy to stay with that carrier for the full contract.

Renting from Cinch fits best when you upgrade every year, want damage cover without adding it separately, don't want a credit card involved, or don't want your phone tied to your mobile line.

What Happens at the End of an iPhone Rental?

At the end of your term, you choose what happens next. You can return the iPhone, upgrade to a newer model, extend your plan, or buy the phone outright. Ending a plan early, after the initial return window, carries an early termination fee of RM350.

iPhone Rental vs Telco Contract FAQs

  1. Is renting an iPhone more expensive than buying? Over 2 years, usually yes. The iPhone 18 Pro 256GB is RM5,499 to buy. Renting it costs RM4,662 for 18 months, with damage cover and the option to return or upgrade. Renting makes more sense if you'd otherwise replace the phone within a year.

  2. How much is the iPhone 18 Pro on Cinch Malaysia? The iPhone 18 Pro 256GB is RM259/month for 18 months, RM275/month for 12 months, RM395/month for 6 months, and RM505/month for 3 months. The iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB is RM282/month on 18 months, RM300/month on 12 months, RM430/month on 6 months, and RM550/month on 3 months.

  3. Can I keep my Maxis, CelcomDigi or U Mobile SIM if I rent from Cinch? Yes. Cinch rents the phone only, so you keep your existing postpaid or prepaid line with any Malaysian carrier.

  4. Can I get an iPhone on installment without a credit card in Malaysia? Bank 0% installment plans need a credit card. Cinch accepts debit cards and checks eligibility online. Some applicants may be asked to make an upfront payment to be approved.

  5. What if I break a rented iPhone? Cinch plans include up to 90% accidental damage coverage for drops and cracks, so you pay a small share of the repair cost rather than the full bill.
